Step-by-Step Guide: BBQ Roll Maneuver for Horizontal Canalithiasis
The BBQ Roll Maneuver is a therapeutic exercise designed to relieve symptoms of horizontal canalithiasis by repositioning dislodged otoconia within the inner ear. The maneuver is adapted based on whether the right or left ear is affected.
Step 1: Start by lying on your left side with your head in midline. Wait for any dizziness to subside, then wait an additional 30–60 seconds.
Step 2: Keeping your head in midline, roll over onto your back so that you are looking up at the ceiling. Wait for dizziness to subside, then wait an additional 30–60 seconds.
Step 3: Keeping your head in midline, roll onto your right side. Wait for any dizziness to subside, then wait an additional 30–60 seconds.
Step 4: Keeping your head in midline, roll onto your stomach while propping yourself up on your elbows and tucking your chin so your nose points toward the floor. If discomfort occurs, use a hands-and-knees position instead. Wait 30–60 seconds.
Step 5: To finish, keep your head in midline and roll onto your left side. Wait 30–60 seconds.
Step 6: Keeping your head in midline, drop your legs off the side of the bed or mat and slowly sit up. Once sitting, wait for an additional 60 seconds before standing. Hold onto something sturdy as you may feel off-balance.
It’s important to perform the BBQ Roll Maneuver movements smoothly and remain in each position for the recommended duration to allow proper repositioning of the otoconia. If you experience significant discomfort or if symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance.
