Gufoni Maneuver for Cupulithiasis

The Gufoni Maneuver is a repositioning technique designed to treat lateral canal cupulolithiasis, a type of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This maneuver helps dislodge otoliths that are attached to the cupula, reducing dizziness and improving balance. It is important to perform this maneuver correctly to maximize effectiveness.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Starting Position
  • Sit upright on a flat surface, such as a bed or treatment table.
  • Ensure your feet are flat on the ground and maintain a relaxed posture.
2. Side-Lying Position
  • Quickly lie down on your unaffected (healthy) side.
  • Keep your head straight and level (do not turn it).
  • Hold this position for 1-2 minutes or until dizziness subsides.
3. Head Rotation
  • While keeping your body still, turn your head 45° downward toward the surface.
  • Maintain this position for 1-2 minutes or until dizziness decreases.
4. Returning to Sitting Position
  • Slowly return to the upright sitting position.
  • Keep your head neutral and remain seated for 30 seconds to regain balance.

t’s important to perform the Gufoni Maneuver smoothly and remain in each position for the recommended duration to allow proper repositioning of the otoconia. If you experience significant discomfort or if symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and guidance.
