Modified Yacovino Maneuver PDF for Anterior Canal or Atypical BPPV

The Modified Yacovino Maneuver PDF is a therapeutic exercise designed to alleviate symptoms of Anterior Canal Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) or atypical forms of BPPV. It helps reposition displaced inner ear crystals (otoconia), reducing dizziness and promoting balance restoration. This maneuver is straightforward to perform and can be an effective part of symptom management.

  • Step 1: Start in long-sitting looking straight ahead, head in midline (neutral head position), with a thick pillow placed behind you at the bottom of your back. The thickness of the pillow should allow for at least 30 degrees of neck extension when you lie down on your back.
  • Step 2: Lie onto your back, achieving at least 30 degrees of neck extension while keeping your head in midline. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Resting your head on the bed or mat table surface is preferred if at all possible.
  • Step 3: Keeping your head in midline, return to an upright seated position, looking straight ahead (neutral head position). Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  • Step 4: Complete the maneuver by forward flexing the neck 45 degrees (or lean your body forward to achieve this degree of flexion if neck range of motion into flexion is limited). Hold this position for 30 seconds. To finish, move to a neutral seated position on the side of the bed or mat table. Wait here for an additional 60 seconds before standing. Hold onto something sturdy as an extra precaution since you may feel off-balance.

It’s important to perform the Modified Yacovino Maneuver smoothly and remain in each position for the recommended duration to allow your inner ear to adjust effectively. If you experience significant discomfort or if symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and support.
